Brain Injuries

Brain injuries are some of the most difficult types of injuries to prove, and they can have the most impact on a person’s life. Any damage done to a person’s head can result in a brain injury; some common causes are car accidents, construction accidents, oxygen deprivation (such as near-drownings), an object penetrating the skull or blunt force (baseball bat). A concussion can result when the brain bounces off the inside of the skull.

TBI or traumatic brain injury can lead to brain damage, cognitive impairment, contusions or a concussion. Other side effects are memory loss, emotional and behavioral issues, hematomas, unconsciousness and seizures, among others.

There are two main types of injuries, closed and penetrating brain injury. Closed injuries occur from the movement of the brain inside the skull as a result of direct impact, such as a sports injury. Penetrating brain injury may result from a firearm or from being struck by a sharp object; this injury is caused by a foreign object entering the skull.

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Strokes (NINDS) stated that a closed head injury is very difficult to recognize and diagnose because the current imaging technology doesn’t register these type of injuries in a reliable manner.

Living with a brain injury can be frustrating, especially if you are not able to work as a result of the injury. The hospital bills, lost wages and the stress associated with such a life-altering injury can seem impossible to manage. Dealing with the consequences of an incident that resulted from someone else’s negligence is unfair, and the reckless party should be held responsible.

The extent of a brain injury is not always apparent. What may initially appear as a minor injury can result in altering a person’s life dramatically. Some brain injuries will require life-long treatment and if you believe another party may have been responsible for your or a loved one’s brain injury, then contact the law office of Carlos G.
